Fedex doesn't do the bare minimum to deliver

Fedex did not call the number provided, so I didn't know they were at my apartment door for me to receive an urgent delivery. The tag they left said they would deliver next day but the tracking number online says it's at a holding location too far for me to get to without additional expense. On top of that, I signed up for notifications but did not get any updates, so what's the point of paying for expedited delivery with tracking?
